Cupping is a method of treatment in Chinese Medicine which involves the use of special glass cups. By creating a vacuum inside the cups and placing the cups onto the body of the patient, a therapeutic effect is achieved by creating a suction effect on the skin, which is said to improve the blood circulation and remove toxins.
What can cupping be used for?
- Musculo-skeletal conditions such as back or shoulder pain or muscle aches.
- Insomnia and sleep disorders.
- Menstrual problems such as heavy bleeding and pain.
- Digestive disorders such as IBS and constipation.
- Respiratory problems such as cough, wheezing and common cold.

Is cupping safe?
Cupping is a non-invasive procedure that is completely safe when performed by an adequately trained practitioner. Adverse reactions such as blistering are extremely rare and usually only occur on patients with sensitive skin. Cupping usually leaves dull marks or bruises on the skin which will normally disappear within a week.
What should I expect from a cupping treatment?
During the cupping treatment, you will feel a deep warming sensation and the skin will turn red, showing that the circulation has been brought to the surface. After the treatment, you may feel deeply relaxed and energised and experience a feeling of lightness and flexibility in areas of pain and muscle tension. You may also find that your skin complexion gradually improves, becoming firmer and smoother with a new and healthy glow.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is the focused application of warmth on the body gained burning moxa (mugwort) near to the skin. Moxibustion is used in two ways, by burning moxa rolls, that are lit and suspended above the skin, or moxa cones that are placed over the skin before being lit. Moxibustion works by improving the circulation of Qi and Blood, warming the channels, relieving pain and boosting the immune system.
What can moxibustion be used for?
- Commonly used to encourage the turning of breech babies. Research shows it has a 65 - 80% success rate.
- Common cold, cough and wheezing.
- Musculo-skeletal conditions such as back or shoulder pain or muscle aches and arthritis.
- Fatigue, low energy, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome.
- Digestive disorders such as IBS and constipation.
- Menstrual problems and fertility and IVF support.
Is moxibustion safe?
Moxibustion is a safe, non-invasive procedure when performed by an adequately trained practitioner. There is a small risk of burning but Sean makes every effort to ensure that this does not occur. Sean will stay with you at all times during the treatment.
What should I expect from a moxibustion treatment?
During a treatment you will be asked to lie or sit on the couch and relax. Once the moxa has been lit you will feel a pleasant warming sensation as the moxa is passed close to the skin. You may feel very relaxed and revived after treatment. There may be some redness of the skin due to improved blood circulation after a treatment which should only last for an hour or so.
